Bush is Consistent
[ send me this essay ]
A 6 page essay that defends Bush on the question of his consistency. In the October 18, 2004 edition of Newsweek magazine, columnist Jonathan Alter quotes Hillary Clinton as saying that "Kerry may sometimes change his positions to fit the facts. But Bush changes the facts to fit his positions" (41). While this bit of elocution makes for snappy copy, examination of Bush's record does not support this assertion as being factual. Campaign Finance Reform
[ send me this essay ]
(5pp). In 1974 Congress passed a set of laws that
changed the amount of money which could be donated
to an individual campaign. Contributions to
candidates are now limited to $1,000, per
contributor, that's called hard money. But of
course many people and organizations, including
special interest groups such as defense
contractors, the gambling industry, organized labor
have more money that they would like to spend on
politics than they can get to candidates in $1,000
increments. So they give much larger amounts to
advocacy groups, political action committees and
the political party. That is called soft money.
Not much else has happened in the last 25 years of
discussion. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
