Howard Jones’ 1987 book “Mutiny on the Amistad: The Saga of a Slave Revolt and its Impact on American Abolition, Law, and Diplomacy” tells of a true story which took place in 1839 and enhanced the cause of the abolitionists in the United States. The tale is about a group of Africans who were kidnapped for the slave trade, turn on their captors and take control of the ship Amistad. The captors, led by the 26 year old Joseph Cinque, hoped to return to their native Africa but instead ended up in New York harbour eventually begin arrested. Their case ended up in the Supreme Court which ruled in favour of the Africans who were allowed to return to their home country. The story turns from one of the dramatic events of the mutiny into the equally if not more dramatic events of the political system, the abolitionist movement and the international controversy which ensues.
