Rodolfo Acuna/Sometimes There is No Other Side
[ send me this essay ]
A 5 page essay that summarizes and analyzes Rodolfo Acuna's Sometimes There is No Other Side. In this volume, Acuna argues convincingly that the playing field for minorities in this country has not been leveled. Rather, he proposes that a "cultural war" is being waged by politically conservative forces of the far right, who are intent on changing the "progressive attitudes inside the American paradigm that had found expression in the 1960s" (34). Silver Mining In 16th To 18th Century South America: Impact Upon Spanish Colonist And Native Populations
[ send me this essay ]
12 pages in length. South America's silver mining from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries paved the way for future economic, political and social progress for Spanish Colonists. While the discovery of this precious metal prompted such adventurers as Juan de Oñate, New Mexico's first governor, it also set a precedent with regard to the extent of South America's extended reach into new and previously uncharted territory. Oñate began these lengthy journeys in 1598 with a party of one hundred fifty men, several servants and additional family. Their five-month expedition led them from Rio Conchos to the Pueblo of San Juan and beyond; however, they could never have made this journey with any success had it not been for the Native American scouts who provided guidance over unfamiliar terrain. The manner by which Spanish colonists ultimately violated and betrayed the native peoples, however, most likely made them sorry for ever offering their assistance. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Studies of Latinos in the United States by Gonzalez and Flores in Regards to Political Participation, Myths about Immigrants, Free Trade Zones and Cultural Hybridity
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing Gonzalez’ and Flores’ works on Latinos in the United States. Juan Gonzalez’ “Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America” (2000) and Juan Flores’ “From Bomba to Hip-Hop: Puerto Rican Culture and Latino Identity” (2000) address several issues relating to Hispanics in the United States and in turn the affect the United States has on Latin America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean countries in regards to free trade agreements. Gonzalez addresses among other issues the barriers encountered by Latinos to fully participate in the U.S. political system, the myths portraying Latino immigration as a burden to the government, and the impact of the free trade zones. Flores provides an extensive coverage of the Puerto Rican experience in the United States including the feeling of cultural hybridity. Together these two authors have provided an important collection of material needed in the study and understanding of the extensive population and multicultural issues which relate to Latinos and the United States.
